A project of Spark Central’s West central publishing Union & the Holmes Elementary Newspaper Club

Each participant gets mentorship from professional journalists every step of the way. Spokesman-Review columnist Shawn Vestal, Inlander photographer Young Kwak and local writer Kat Smith all volunteered their time this semester to support the junior journalists as they created their newspaper.

Once published, we distribute 2,000 copies of the newspaper around the West Central neighborhood — and the junior journalists are so proud to see their hard work published in a real paper!

Each semester, Spark Central invites 5th & 6th graders at Holmes Elementary to take part in creating their very own community newspaper.

The junior journalists come up with original ideas, then conduct the research and interviews they need to write their articles. They learn to take photos, create comic strips and express their opinions in editorial pieces. Most importantly, they gain the tools — and the confidence — to make their voices heard in their community.
