Gondolas & Garbage Goats: A Book Project

3 Sessions · Mondays, May 6, 13, and 20 • 5:30 to 7 PM

Teens & Adults · Take a trip down memory lane for the 50th anniversary of Expo ‘74 in this three-session poetry and short prose workshop with local writers Benjamin Van Voorhis and Leah Dawdy. The first two workshop sessions will include discussions about the craft of writing, as well as prompts, readings, and images based around the history of Spokane that will inspire you to create work celebrating the city’s growth and change. In the third meeting of this workshop, edit and refine your writing generated from the earlier prompts alongside other participants with the help of our project leads.

Participants’ final pieces will be published in a professionally-bound book featuring original art. Participation in the first two sessions of this workshop and community event release will be asked of all participants who are able to attend. Registration for this program is free thanks to financial support from Spokane Arts and the City of Spokane. Donations are still welcome via your registration, which supports other Spark Central programming, keeping costs free for our community.

Grades 6-8 · Travel back in time to the World’s Fair, 1974! In this comics workshop, we’ll create short panels exploring Expo ‘74. Our characters will ride the gondolas and magically appear 50 years in the past! What will your characters explore? Work produced for this program has the option of being included in Spark Central’s 2024 book project, Gondolas & Garbage Goats — but we’ll need a guardian’s permission to do so! If you want your youth’s work included, please RSVP using the link below. We’ll have paper forms available during the program, as well.

Then, we’ll pick a place to plop him, draw that setting behind him, and write about his adventures there. Work produced for this program has the option of being included in Spark Central’s 2024 book project, Gondolas & Garbage Goats — but we’ll need a guardian’s permission to do so! Grades 3 - 8 · Drop in to explore architecture, engineering and art through Minecraft! Each session, participants will be given a building prompt related to one or more of these fields. Then, they'll work together to plan their build and join a Minecraft world to create it. Staff and volunteers will monitor games to ensure the safety of youth as they play.

Ages 5 - 105 · Bring your curiosity, imagination, and thirst for adventure, and we will supply the rest! If you have ever been curious about role-playing games, join us to experience this unique form of game-playing — we'll build a shared narrative using cooperative problem solving, exploration, imagination, and rich social interaction. 

Priority seating will be provided for participants age 17 or younger. We gladly make every effort to accommodate persons with accessibility requirements.
