Fantastic Mr Fox

A short play by Allison (HOLMES, GRADE 4), Inspired by the book FanTASTic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

Characters: Mr. Fox (the clever hero), Mrs. Fox (his patient wife), Fox Pups 1 and 2 (two of them, cute but tricky), Farmer Boggis Buncenbeaner (the most cranky farmer in the world ever!), and the Narrator

Scene 1: How It All Began

Narrator: In a farm far away lived the most cranky farmer who ever lived.
Farmer: [angrily:] Only a thousand bucks!
Farmer: [bouncing in anger:] Those chickens better lay more eggs, or they’re on the chopping block!

Scene 2: In The Forest

Narrator: Next to the farm was a big, vast forest. In that forest lived a family of four foxes.
Mr. Fox: What should we get for dinner tonight dear - a duck, chicken, or goose?
Mrs. Fox: Two fat ducks, dear. One for us and one for the children.
Fox Pups: Yummy Ducks!
Mr. Fox: I’ll just pop over to the Buncenbeaner farm.

Scene 3: Farmer Buncenbeaner’s Big Dig

Narrator: One day the farmer was tired of Mr. Fox stealing his property.
Farmer: That brash fox!
Narrator: He started pacing and scratching his chin.
Farmer: [smiling a cheeky smile:] Aaahhaa. I got an idea!
Narrator:  So that night, the farmer waited for the fox to come take a chicken. Then he followed Mr. Fox home! He marked the spot on a map. The next day he returned with a big, horrible digging machine!
Farner: I will DIG him out or my name is not Boggis Buncenbeaner!
Narrator: The family of foxes below heard the rumbling. Mr. Fox realized what was happening!
Mr. Fox: Someone is digging in. We need to dig out! DIG!
Narrator: The Fox family tunneled with all their might. The farmer dug and dug but found nothing.
Farmer: I’ll get my men and some food. We will surround the hill and wait them out!

Scene 4: In the Hole
Fox pup 1
: Hi, I’m hungry!
Narrator: The foxes have been waiting in the hole for three days straight! Yet Mr. Fox was thinking up a nice plan while they waited.
Mr. Fox: I got an idea! A good one it is, but I’ll need two helpers, who wants to volunteer?
Narrator: The two fox pups were excited to help!
Fox pups: (Jumping with excitement:) We will! We want to help you dad!
Mrs. Fox: That’s two bright little kids I have, I must not fail them!
Mr. Fox: Now, my family, we must DIG!
Narrator: The family started digging until Mr. Fox was sure they had reached a certain spot. A certain Brick Spot.
Mr. Fox: If I’m right this will be a place we can break though and then we will get to eat LIKE KINGS! (He pushes a brick and it falls.) Eureka I did it! (He dances with joy.)
Narrator: The Fox family peered through the hole to see chickens, turkeys, and many more delicious foods. Where to begin?

Scene 5: A Feast!

Narrator: They had found the farmer’s storage shed and for four hungry foxes it was a sight from the heavens! Their mouths were drooling puddles. They could not believe it!
Fox Cub 2: But daddy what are we going to drink?
Mr. Fox: Look to your left my dear and you'll see shelves of lovely drinks to drink.
Fox Cub 1: Woah!
Narrator: So Mr. Fox and his cubs borrowed a little cart and filled it with all the yummy food they were going to eat.
Narrator: And when they showed Mrs. Fox the food…
Mrs. Fox: I must be dreaming!
Fox Cubs: You’re not dreaming mama!
Narrator: The four foxes prepared a great feast. A nice Feast of a feast!
Mrs. Fox: To my husband, a great fox!
Fox Family: CHEERS!

Scene 6: The End

Narrator: On top of the crater which used to be the hill where the Fox family lived, the mean old farmer sat waiting still!
Farmer: In a few days more I know you’re gonna break Mr. Fox!
Narrator: Meanwhile back in the hole the Fox Family started to build a nice new home without the farmer ever knowing that they had tunneled into his food storage to steal even more! The Fox family celebrated with Ice Cream. The creamiest Ice Cream of them all!
