WEST CENTRAL EXPRESS
A project of Spark Central’s West central publishing Union & the Holmes Elementary Newspaper Club
Each participant gets mentorship from professional journalists every step of the way. Spokesman-Review columnist Shawn Vestal, Inlander photographer Young Kwak and local writer Kat Smith all volunteered their time this semester to support the junior journalists as they created their newspaper.
Once published, we distribute 2,000 copies of the newspaper around the West Central neighborhood — and the junior journalists are so proud to see their hard work published in a real paper!
Each semester, Spark Central invites 5th & 6th graders at Holmes Elementary to take part in creating their very own community newspaper.
The junior journalists come up with original ideas, then conduct the research and interviews they need to write their articles. They learn to take photos, create comic strips and express their opinions in editorial pieces. Most importantly, they gain the tools — and the confidence — to make their voices heard in their community.

We tasted produce grown in West Central’s empty lots by River City Youth Ops, a youth-run urban farm. Each summer, kids from the neighborhood work together to plant seeds, harvest the produce and sell it at local farmer’s markets.
What really happens when you sit at the buddy bench on the Holmes Elementary School playground?
Did you know that the buddy bench was made to make friends? Well, not exactly. It was made to cure loneliness, I think. Anyway, it was pretty much made for sad kids.

I think they’re cute. Mrs. Fracz says that we don’t have class pets because some kids have allergies to some animals. But if we asked all the students if they have any allergies, the class could have that class pet.
What is a newspaper?
A series of questions, asked and answered. A chronicle of what’s important and interesting. An act of citizenship and community, produced by people trying to inform, edify and entertain their neighbors.
Have you ever wondered how people from Holmes rate their own school? Well, today I am going to be telling you about how a few people rate their school, Holmes Elementary.
Why is there so much construction in the West Central neighborhood this year?

MiPosaur
MiPosaur is a t-rex robot that plays with its ball. We like that it is a t-rex and that it roars. It is hard to play with because it is hard to train. The directions are confusing.
TEIGHAN

If you play Minecraft, you have got to see Dan TDM’s videos because he plays Minecraft. He is really good at Minecraft.

Pokémon go is a mobile app game. First you need to make an avatar (a mini-me). To move your avatar, just move it — for example make it walk or run by moving yourself.
